Tools of the Trade – Great Guard Gear Online

If you are a security guard working for a big security company, chances are all your gear is paid for by the firm. Or, you can purchase it, as needed, from the company using their great discounts. However, working for a big company isn’t always the best option–or even feasible. Some security guards work freelance jobs either full-time or to supplement a “main” job. If this is the case for you, finding affordable (yet high quality) gear may be a challenge. We’ve put together a list of four websites that may help you get the best deals possible–plus a few tips to help you navigate these waters.

  • Amazon – If you want to read the latest best-seller or order a new toy for your kid, you probably check Amazon. However, it can be an excellent place to shop for work gear too. Amazon carries a wide variety of products themselves and has a HUGE collection of sellers that use the platform to sell semi-independently too. If you have a specific brand you like, check Amazon first. You may be surprised to find they sell directly through the site. One of the best things about buying from Amazon is that you’ll usually get fast shipping, and if you are an Amazon Prime member, that shipping may even be free.
  • eBay – Buying security gear from eBay may seem a little scary. But, if you’re willing to do your homework it can be quite rewarding. eBay is so successful because there are millions of sellers on the platform. Taking a quick look at the ad, the profile and feedback of a seller will give you a great insight as to how knowledgeable and successful the seller is. You may be able to buy lightly used gear for a fraction of the cost of new. Plus, you can contact the seller directly before purchase and make sure you are going to be satisfied with what you buy.
  • Army-Navy Surplus – Army-Navy stores are a great resource for purchasing security guard gear. If you have a local shop, it may be your first stop. However, realize that these shops are usually independently owned and operated. If you don’t find what you’re looking for locally, connecting with another online may be a good solution. Check out the options in your metro area, or within your state, for the lowest shipping rates. Some of these stores may also have liquidation centers where the prices are even better!
  • Quartermaster – Sometimes, it just makes sense to order your gear from one streamlined resource. Quartermaster may not have the lowest prices, but they really do carry one of the largest inventories of security gear anywhere. Check out their site and consider signing up for the mailing list to get coupons and information about the latest promotions. By shopping on a streamlined site, you’ll be able to outfit yourself with little effort.

While shopping for security gear may be a little more complex than grabbing a pair of Khakis at Target, the overall process is much easier when you have a plan. Consider stockpiling an extra outfit “just in case” so you don’t find yourself struggling if something breaks or tears. Once you’re outfitted, you’ll find that freelance work can be quite fulfilling and profitable too.
